Dr. Alan Robinson is an active performer, composer, and author based in Lexington, KY. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University.

Alan has performed and shared the stage with acts such as The Platters, John Rich, Stryper, and the Winery Dogs. He has also led a variety of bands spanning multiple genres, including TOYS (Metal), Depot Road (Country), 4-Cast (Jazz), Toxic Toyz (Metal), and The Alan Robinson Band (Progressive Instrumental Rock).

His recordings include independent releases with The Tommy Money Jazz Orchestra, 4Cast, Psychedelic Rendezvous, TOYS: Let the Games Begin, and the instrumental rock project Contemplation. In 2021, he composed and recorded Circuition: Concerto for Jazz Guitar and Orchestra, a four-movement programmatic work for guitar and full orchestra that served as the centerpiece of his doctoral dissertation.

Alan has also authored two books designed to help guitarists expand their musical horizons: The Harmonic Expansion Process: The Rock Guitarist’s Guide to Playing Jazz (2023), which bridges rock techniques into jazz harmony in a practical, approachable way; and Mastering Chord Forms: The Guitarist’s Guide to Harmonic Expression (May 2, 2024).

Throughout his career, Alan has balanced performance, composition, education, and military service. He previously served as Assistant Professor of Music at Belmont University, where he taught Commercial Guitar, Improvisation, and directed the Commercial Guitar Ensemble. He has also held positions as Director of Jazz and Contemporary Music at Pikeville University and Jazz Guitar Instructor at the University of Kentucky and Campbellsville University. Alan served in the United States Air Force and the United States Army, where he was principal guitarist and director of the jazz and rock ensembles with the 202nd Army Band. He retired from active duty in 2017 at the rank of Sergeant Major.Alan holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Music from Eastern Kentucky University, and a Bachelor of Music from the Berklee College of Music. He has studied with Jon Finn, Joe Stump, Jonathan Kreisberg, Mike Stern, Greg Howe, Allen Hinds, and Frank Gambale.
